CONFERENCE: EU’S NEIGBOURHOOD POLICY: SOUTH CAUCASUS

 

The conference, entitled “EU’s Neighbourhood Policy: South Caucasus” has been held at Gure Campus Social Facilities Hall on 18th May, 2012 - 11.00 by BLACKCSR, with participation of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yelda DEMİRAĞ from Başkent University Department of International Relations, as lecturer.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yelda Demirağ said that increasing the EU's future energy needs in twenty years and met with the majority of imports. So, for the EU, in order to ensure diversity of supply sources, and not being dependent on a single source in the Caspian region is a quite significant. Demirağ, pointed the importance of South Caucasus in terms of the energy resources and their transportation to Europe  via this region.

Demirağ, by emphasizing determinancy of difficult security problems in the region that causes problems in the process of region’s integration to the Europe, reiterated that the Union should be active  about conflict resolution, economic development, improving democratic institutions, and emphasis in supporting a variety of infrastructure projects.

Demirağ stressed that the EU can be addressed in three periods strategy towards the region. In the first period (1991-1999) the economic and technical assistance was intensive. The EU has played a more active role in the second period (1999-2003). Demirağ, attaches more importance in the region the scope of the EU neighborhood policy in the region by 2004. EU has designated diverse policies and developed relations with each country under the neighborhood policy.
